Hip-Hop Dance Classes in SouthamptonAn adults’ room, starting from absolute zero.

Southampton has good hip-hop, and nearly all of it is aimed at people who started young or want to compete. This list is for the other crowd entirely: adults who have never set foot inside a dance class, would rather not share a floor with fourteen-year-olds who can already do it, and want to learn to move to music they have loved for twenty years. Put your name down; when the list fills we hire a room, book a teacher and email the start date. Once it is running the cost is £10 a session or £32 for four weeks.

The hip-hop list

Grown-ups, starting late.

Half a minute and five details, none of which cost anything. The postcode box shapes where we hire, since the Portswood and university end of the city and the Southampton Central end suit very different rooms. Everybody listed here gets the launch email before it goes anywhere public.

Adults in the main room, absolute beginners especially — details below for the start-date email.

Sending this means joining the interest list for this class — we’ll email you when it has a start date and a place for you.

Why hip-hop

The groove is the whole thing.

Beginner hip-hop is not a set of tricks, it is a bounce. Before any choreography arrives you learn to sit inside the beat — knees loose, weight low, head nodding whether you asked it to or not — and almost everything afterwards is a variation on that. It is the most forgiving style to start late in, because nobody expects turnout, extension or thirteen years of training, and a slightly stiff adult who commits to the groove reads better than a bendy one who doesn’t.

01

No crews, no battles. There is no team to make, nothing to compete in and no showcase to be cast in. It is a weekly hour and then you go home.

02

Written for adults. The main list runs from seventeen upward; junior brackets on the form gather names for a separate class rather than this one.

03

The music does half the work. Whoever teaches picks the tracks, and beginner rooms tend to run on things you already know every word of.

once the list fills — the teacher decides how the hour runs
1

Getting the bounce

Warm-up doubles as the first lesson: finding the down-beat in your knees rather than in your head, which is the whole foundation of the style.

2

Foundations, named

The moves have names and histories and a good beginner block teaches both. Which ones turn up, and in what order, is entirely the teacher’s call.

3

Eight counts, joined up

The last part of the hour joins the pieces into something short and plays it properly loud. Nothing is filmed, nothing is graded.

every teacher runs this differently — the shape of an hour, not a promise about its contents

Drop in£10one session, once live

Come the weeks you can. Missing one costs nothing and catches up quickly inside a beginner block.

Four weeks£32bought as a block, once live

Four consecutive weeks is roughly when the bounce stops being something you think about and becomes automatic.

Hip-hop & this city

The beginners this scene keeps skipping.

This city has a genuine street-dance culture, thousands of students around Portswood who arrived already able to move, and studios full of people who started at eight. What almost nobody runs is a room for a thirty-four-year-old who has never done this, cannot count music, and does not fancy being the visibly worst person in a class of teenagers. A cheap, central, adults-from-scratch hip-hop hour inside walking distance of Southampton Central is the whole idea here.

Nothing to unlearn. Starting with no habits at all is genuinely easier than starting with twenty years of half-copied ones.

The postcode decides which side of the city we hunt for a floor on. It is not there for marketing purposes.

Hip-hop, no attitude required.

nine questions from people who have never done this ↓

Is this class actually for adult beginners?+

That is the entire premise. The main list runs from seventeen upward and is written for people whose dance experience is nil. Junior brackets exist on the form, but they feed a separate list rather than sharing this floor.

What is the difference between hip-hop and street?+

They overlap heavily and different teachers draw the line in different places. Broadly, hip-hop names a culture and a set of foundational moves with real history behind them, while street is the wider umbrella that has absorbed a lot of studio choreography. A beginner block feels similar either way.

Do I need to be fit before I start?+

No. You will be warm and slightly out of breath, which is not the same as needing to arrive fit. Pace yourself, take water, and remember that nobody in a beginner room is watching anybody except themselves.

What does an evening cost once it starts?+

Ten pounds for one session, or thirty-two for four weeks taken together. Nothing to join, nothing annual, and the interest list itself is free and escapable by simply ignoring the email.

Am I too old to start this properly?+

Almost certainly not. Adults pick foundations up faster than expected because they listen better and ask more questions. The upper end of the list is seventy-five and it is not there for decoration.

What should I turn up wearing on the night?+

Loose clothing you can sweat in and clean indoor trainers with a bit of grip. That is the entire list. Kit is not supplied, sold or lent by us, and nothing needs buying before you have been once.

Is there any competing, battling or performing?+

None of it. No competition team, no battles, no showcase, no auditions. If you want that eventually, this city has places for it and your teacher will happily point you toward them — it is just not what this hour is.

When would the class actually get going?+

Once enough names make the room and the teacher affordable. When that happens everybody on the list is emailed the evening, the address and the first date together, before the class is advertised anywhere else.

Can I sign up to a couple of lists at once?+

Of course. They are counted separately and emailed separately, so sitting on two or three costs nothing and forces no choice. People routinely take whichever one opens first.
