Hen party group mid-routine in their Flash Dance dance class
The 1983 audition, restaged on purpose

Flash Dance Hen Party Dance Class SouthamptonTake your passion — and possibly a towel.

There is a reason this one keeps getting picked: the film is one long dance audition, and a hen party is one long dance audition with better snacks. Flash Dance is the sweatiest hen party dance class we run and the most satisfying to finish — leg warmers optional, chair entirely metaphorical, bucket of water firmly absent. Your teacher builds a piece live out of what the group can actually do, working up to the kind of ending that puts everybody's arms in the air. No experience required; a hair tie is genuinely more use than talent. £185 covers ninety minutes for the entire party and £160 covers the hour, with the venue's own hire cost the single extra.

Why it works

The theme that earns its final pose.

Some hen party ideas are about the costume. This one is about the last thirty seconds. The material is jazz-flavoured, big-armed and unashamedly early-eighties, and it is structured so the group climbs — small moves first, then a section that travels, then a finish everyone lands together. It is the dance hen party for people who would rather earn the drinks than pose for them, and groups who describe themselves as thoroughly unfit routinely leave saying they would do it again, which is either endorphins or denial.

(i)

Genuinely a workout. Bring water and something to tie your hair back; this hen do dance class is the one where the windows steam up.

(ii)

Nothing supplied, ever. Leg warmers, off-the-shoulder sweatshirts, headbands — the group sources its own or turns up in gym kit. We bring the teacher, the music, nothing more.

(iii)

A finale built in. The soundtrack hands your teacher an obvious place to land, and landing together is the whole reason the video is worth keeping.

a

Coats down, kettle on

Arrive, meet your teacher, establish who is here under duress. They tend to convert first, and fastest.

b

A warm-up with intent

Properly warm before anything strenuous, because unlike most themes this one genuinely asks something of your legs.

c

Building upward

Short phrases drilled and stacked, growing into a routine your teacher composes as they read what the room can handle.

d

The pose, filmed

A full run from the top, camera at the front, everybody ending in the same shape at the same moment. Ideally.

Flash Dance, answered honestly.

what organisers ask before they commit ↓

Is Flash Dance genuinely harder than your other themes?+

It is the most physical thing on the list, yes, though hard is not quite the right word — the steps stay simple, there are just more of them and they keep moving. Your teacher scales the whole thing on sight and builds rest into the shape of the session. Nobody has ever been thrown out for stopping to catch their breath.

Do we need leg warmers and eighties gym gear?+

Not remotely, although plenty of groups enjoy the excuse. Anything you can move and sweat in works fine. Whatever look you settle on, sourcing it is the group's job — we hand out no costumes, no headbands and no props of any kind. Trainers with grip beat fashion here, and hair off the face beats both.

Will there be a chair, and please, no water?+

No chair, no bucket, no welding equipment. The famous moment is a lovely bit of cinema and a terrible idea in a hired room with a wooden floor and eighteen coats in the corner. Your teacher will happily reference it in the choreography purely as a gag, and everybody goes home dry.

What does a Flash Dance hen class cost in total?+

£185 buys ninety minutes for everyone present, £160 buys sixty, and the venue's hire fee is the only other line on the page — sent in writing with your date. At your own hen house there is no venue fee whatsoever. This is a hen party activity, not a per-person ticket, so the headcount can wander freely between now and then.

Which tracks does the routine actually get built on?+

Whatever your teacher reaches for on the day. The eighties audition-movie catalogue is the pool — What a Feeling, Maniac and a few neighbours from the same era — and the choice depends on the energy in front of them, not on a list agreed weeks earlier. Requests made in the room are welcome and usually granted on the spot.

Can we do this straight after arriving at Southampton Central?+

That is the standard shape of the day: train in, walk ten minutes, dance, then out to the Bedford Place bars or down towards Ocean Village. One of the rooms we hire is a short hop from the station, so bags-down to warm-up takes roughly a quarter of an hour.

If the group votes for less cardio.
